About the city

Upper San Al-Hajar was one of the ancient villages of Al Sharkia Governorate in the Arab Republic of Egypt. In the past, it was called Tanis, and its name in the Torah was “Swaan,” as it was mentioned in ancient Egyptian writings as “Ja'nat”.

Tanis dates back to the New Kingdom, and it has no mention before, unlike the city of San Al-Hajar on the western bank of the Nile River, which was called by the Pharaohs "Sau" and the Greeks called it "Sais". The history of São (San al-Hajar) dates back to 4000 B.C. It is now the center and upper San Al-Hajar.
